Historical Moments

1905-1919: The roots of the Muncie Flyers date back to 1905 when the Congerville Athletic Club began playing football in Muncie, Indiana. After a decade they merged with another local team called the Congerville Flyers. After a season playing as the Congerville Thirds they would begin play as the Congerville Flyers. The Flyers would be one of the stronger teams in Indiana and were one of 14 teams invited to join the American Professional Football Association.

1920: The new APFA would allow teams to make their own schedules, and with a majority of teams in Ohio travel would be difficult for the Flyers as they were thoroughly thumped in their first game on October 3rd losing to the Rock Island Independents. Scheduled to play the Decatur Staleys a week later, the Flyers had their game cancelled as the Staleys chose to play a stronger team. The bad outing for the Flyers in the season opener kept many teams away. Several other teams would cancel games against Muncie as they played just one league game, as their players left for other teams. The Flyers would end the season with three wins against teams that were not in the AFPA, but the games would not count to the standings as they finished 0-1.

1921: The Muncie Flyers would have a similar fate in their second season as they played just two league games losing to the Evansville Crimson Giants and Cincinnati Celts by twin scores of 14-0. The Flyers in two seasons played just three league games, losing all three without scoring a single point. Frustrated the Flyers would leave the APFA as it became the National Football League in 1922. They would revert to the name Congerville Flyers and again play as an independent team. Playing most their games on the road, the Flyers would exist three more years in Muncie and another year in neighboring Jonesboro before folding in 1925.
