1891: After the Kelly’s Killers decided not to complete the season, the American Association invited the Milwaukee Brewers of the Western League to play out the final 36 games of the Cincinnati’s schedule. The Western League was one of the top minor leagues at the time, and the Brewers hoping the invite would lead to a permeant membership were happy to oblige. Most of the roster was the same Brewers roster that played in the Western League with Jack Carney, Frank Dwyer, Willie Mains, Farmer Vaughn and Jim Canavan being the only Killers to sign on to finish their season. The Brewers played well posting a record of 21-15, as Vaugh led the team in hitting with a .333 average while Dwyer batted .300 with a team best three home runs. On the mound George Davies and Frank Killen each won seven games, with Killen posting an impressive 1.68 ERA. On September 12th in a 10-4 win against the Washington Senators Abner Dalrymple hit for the cycle. Sadly, for Milwaukee they would not get their big-league upgrade did not arrive as the American Association ceased operations with four teams moving on to the National League. A new Brewers team would join the Western League in 1894, that team would still be in the league in 1901 when the Western League became the American League, but lasted one season, as Milwaukee did not have a major league caliber stadium.
