Two AL West teams below .500 faced-off in T-Mobile Park on Friday. The Athletics took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and held onto the lead until veteran Justin Upton hit a pinch-hit homer in the 8th to tie the game.

The low scoring affair was settled when second baseman, Abraham Toro singled for the home team in the 9th to give Seattle the 2-1 win. The Mariners are 38-42, but have shown signs of promise with a group of young players flashing their potential from time to time.

The A’s are now 26-54, struggling with a franchise rebuild, and find themselves at the bottom of the division. The four game series will conclude on Sunday with Frankie Montas (Oakland) taking on Robbie Ray (Seattle).
