The Goal Heard Around The World

On Tuesday morning for those of us within the States that live in Eastern Time regions, we witnessed history, as the 51st ranked team in the World, Saudi Arabia beat the number 3 team in the World, Argentina.

Behind a goal from Saleh Al-Shehri to level the match at 1-1 after Leo Messi connected from the penalty spot, the goal of the tournament was then scored by Salem Al-Dawsari to take the 2-1 lead that Saudi Arabia would not relinquish.

Argentina, who has looked disjointed in their shape, and team balance seemed to be on cruise control for the entirety of the match. Saudi Arabia’s keeper, Mohammed Al-Owais refused to be beaten in the second half, accumulating 5 saves in total, including one that was surely destined for the back of the net.

The result leaves Group C in a unique position, with the Saudi’s being the only team with a win, Poland and Mexico sit at 1 point after a 0-0 draw. It will be a big ask for Saudi Arabia to grab points against both Mexico and Poland, but possibly an even bigger ask of Argentina to climb their way out of last place.
