Ernie Banks, a longtime fan favorite with the Chicago Cubs, becomes the ninth player to hit 500 career home runs. The milestone comes before a small crowd at Wrigley Field. Banks hit one into the bleachers in the left-field bleachers against Pat Jarvis of the Atlanta Braves in the second inning. The Cubs would win the game 4-3 in 11 innings. Ernie Banks would retire following the 1971 season, hitting 512 home runs in a 19-year career, exclusively with the Cubs.
