The United States defeats the British Isles 3-0 in the first International Lawn Tennis Challenge at the Longwood Cricket Club in Boston. It was a four on four challenge with four singles matches and a doubles match, under a best of five formats. The format was designed by American Captain Dwight Davis, who led a threesome from Harvard and spent his own money to purchase a trophy. The tournament would grow over the years, as the trophy was named the Davis Cup.
