Namath had been chosen by the Jets first overall in the 1964 AFL Draft and was picked 12th by the St. Louis Cardinals in the NFL Draft. To get Joe Namath to sign, Jets Owner Sonny Werblin gave the Alabama quarterback as record three-year deal worth $427,000.
