2003/04 NHL Awards Watch

JACK ADAMS AWARD (Best Coach)

John Tortorella
Tampa Bay Lightning

Just 2 years ago the Lightning were considered a NHL joke, now they have the top seed in the Eastern Conference with the second best record overall in the NHL for that Tortorella deserves his due.

SELKE TROPHY (Best Defensive Forward)

Kris Draper
Detroit Red Wings

Despite missing most of March to a shoulder injury Draper’s bruising presence was a key to the Red Wings capturing the President’s Trophy for the best overall record, while leading the grind line, with a +22.

VEZINA TROPHY (Best Goalie)

Martin Brodeur
New Jersey Devils

Winning 38 games for the Devils Martin Brodeur continued his role as the steadiest goalie in the NHL as the low scoring Devils posted 100 points despite being hit hard with injuries.

CALDER TROPHY (Rookie of the Year)

Andrew Raycroft
Boston Bruins

With a solid 2.05 GAA Raycroft could get some consideration for the Vezina, as his steady goaltending on the low scoring Bruins was the key to the North East Division Title.

NORRIS TROPHY (Best Defenseman)

Scott Niedermayer
New Jersey Devils

Without Niedermayer the Devils may have been lost as he more then stepped up in the role of captain in Scott Stevens absence leading the Devils to another solid 100-point season.

HART TROPHY (NHL MVP)

Martin St. Louis
Tampa Bay Lightning

Martin St. Louis was the best story in the NHL all season, overlooked for his size, he proved to be the MVP, capturing the scoring title while leading the Lightning to the best record in the East.

These are not just mere prediction but whom I believe should win the said awards. Slected by Frank Fleming on April 5, 2004 at 2:40 pm EST
